While many people think that steel is environmentally unfriendly, this is actually not the case. Home Improvement Pages lists a number of environmental benefits to be had from building with steel. Steel is environmentally sound because:

  • It is recyclable – unlike some other building materials, steel can be removed and reused at the end of a building’s life or melted down to make other steel products.
  • It reduces pollution – because steel components are created offsite, construction sites that employ steel are much cleaner environments, without the dust and noise that result from working with timber.
  • It allows for more environmentally-friendly designs – because steel is so strong, buildings that use it can be more lightweight, sustainable and energy-efficient and can have less impact on their surrounding environment.
  • It requires no treatment – unlike wood, steel is completely termite-proof, so it doesn’t need to be treated with toxic chemicals that can leach into groundwater and damage the environment.
